Glasswork

Drawing on the tradition of photographic experimentation in Fox Talbot’s book, The Pencil of Nature, 1844-46, in which he portrayed glass and china objects to showcase how photography could portray the different qualities of light, I seek innovative ways of reinterpreting similar objects in the context of ‘new’ technology. I have investigated the effects of light on different coloured and textured glass and china at different times of the day, when the quality of the light and the characteristics of the objects' shadows vary greatly. I have also explored the effects of solarisation and other computer software manipulation on these images.

These works also pay tribute to female artists, such as Olive Cotton, Grace Cossington-Smith and Margaret Preston, who turned to familiar domestic objects and scenes for creative inspiration, using the tea cup and other items of crockery and glassware to explore form and the effects of light and shadow.
