Commemorations of World War I

Helen Malone's artist book Back to the Front, made in an edition of four, will be displayed at four venues in the coming months. It will be included in the exhibition Between the Sheets at Gallery Central, 12 Aberdeen Street, Perth, WA from 7 March to 2 April 2015.

Back to the Front will also be exhibited in Of Peace and War: Anzac Centenary Commemoration Exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, 22 Omrah Avenue Caloundra, from 25 March to 10 May 2015; and 100 Books, A Personal Histories International Artists Book Exhibition which will have a WWI component, at the Redland Art Gallery, Bloomfield Street, Cleveland, from 27 March to the 10 May 2015. Helen will be giving an artists talk on the WWI books during the exhibition on 24 April.

One copy of the book will be travelling back to France where it will be exhibited in Delires de Livres at the Collegiale St Andre in Chartres from 25 April to the 17 May 2015. Helen's contemporary photographs of some of the WWI battlefields where Australian soldiers fought and died have been transformed into the muddy brown deathly landscapes of the Western Front and white crosses have been added in charcoal as symbols of the dead. The viewer is invited to reflect on the horrific reality of the price that had to be paid for peace.
